Glee – What’s all the fuss about?

February 22, 2010 By: Geek Category: TV news

The Gl517zpmsJeeL. SL160 Glee Whats all the fuss about?ee TV series is taking the world by storm in all its white-toothed, harmonizing, bouncy glory, but how has this saccharin sweet comedy drama done so well for itself? Ah, that’ll be the geek link then. There seems to have been a noticeable shift in recent years for TV shows based on the Underdogs in society (waves at the audience).51UyZ4S88rL. SL160 Glee Whats all the fuss about?

Stuff like the Big Bang Theory has been of note this past few years, and the Glee TV series has the same sort of appeal. It’s a show aimed at the misfits amongst us, and if you’re at this site, then I’m sure that’s something you can relate to.

Why is it being written about here? Because I think the Glee TV series is a cool gateway show for young viewers to get into, and thus find other shows they will love in the future.

51v5oL76TdL. SL160 Glee Whats all the fuss about? It’s the same reason we don’t have a problem with Harry Potter or Twilight, as they are all things that are great for younger audiences to be into before they move onto the proper stuff. The Glee TV Show may not be to our particular tastes, but it is telling a new generation of burgeoning geeks that they don’t have to follow the herd. Don’t stop believing, and all that icon wink Glee Whats all the fuss about?

Kick Ass – This Year’s Comic Book Movie Hit?

February 18, 2010 By: Geek Category: Movies

51EKpYyThFL. SL160 Kick Ass This Years Comic Book Movie Hit?The trailers are out, the posters are showing up all around the world, and we’re not far off finally seeing the long awaited adaptation of the notorious Mark Millar/John Romita Jr comic series KICK ASS.

The buzz is reaching its apex, but is this flick going to be this year’s major comic book movie hit? Probably not in terms of box office (IRON MAN 2 will take that honour, without a doubt), but possibly in terms of acclaim, anyway.5125uFX1bLL. SL160 Kick Ass This Years Comic Book Movie Hit?

With what has the potential to be a, erm, kick ass cast and direction that seems to have really captured the spirit of the source material, I think a lot of people around the world are about to get a n51px2q0HtBL. SL160 Kick Ass This Years Comic Book Movie Hit?ew favourite film.

The release of the Kick Ass movie is being accompanied by a bunch of tie-in making of books and whatnot, all of which are helping the cause by giving non-comics fans a look behind what it takes to put these stories together. It does feel a bit weird when something that has been so loved by a core audience crosses over into the mainstream, but at least this time it looks like we have something to be proud of. Now that kicks ass.

My chest of wonders!” Well, if that doesn’t float your boat you could just wear the t-shirts. Comic book t-shirts have become one of the most popular fashion accessories in the past couple of years, with superheroes and other comics characters showing up on garments at an ever increasing rate.

Hell, you can get Avengers underwear and Hulk sneakers now. The range of comic book t-shirts currently available is staggering, and pretty much any character from any publisher can be found on a shirt.

Granted, about 90 percent of comic book t-shirts will feature characters from DC and Marvel, but if you have a look around you can find most of your favourite characters from o41xgry wDxL. SL500 Comic Book T Shirts: Give Your Chest Superpowersther publishers too. You could see comic book t-shirts and being a statement of your interests, your own allegiance or just something that looks pretty damn cool.

Taking a look in my own wardrobe for example, there’s three Judge Dredd t-shirts, a Spider-Man shirt, an X-men shirt, a Marvel villains shirt, a ‘Support Indie Publishers’ shirt, a Midtown Comics shirt my old housemate brought me from New York and a bunch of anime and movie t-shirts that are also great for suiting every mood.

That’s a good point actually- you can stick a comic book t-shirt on to suit every mood. Feeling angry and full of rage? Wear a Wolverine shirt. Feeling sneaky and mysterious? Batman shirts all the way. You get the idea. Want a bold fashion statement that is gonna last? Check out some of your four-colour heroes.

Five Geek Movies With A Difference

February 11, 2010 By: Geek Category: Movies

Geeks and movies go together like Han and Chewie, but there’s a common misconception that all we’re into is spaceships, monsters and people in spandex with hair that never gets messed up. While this is true to a certain extent, there’s much more to geeky films than just insane blockbusters and guys running away from explosions Just In Time. Here are five brilliant films that are dear to the hearts of many geeks.

Ghost World: The movie adaptation of the classic graphioc novel by Daniel Clowes is a bittersweet story of two girls coming to terms with how life changes once you’re thrown into the real world. A great cast is headed up by Thora Birch, Scarlett Johansson and Steve Buscemi.

Napoleon Dynamite: Vote for Pedro! A modern cult classic geek movie. It’s funny as hell once you get the hang of the humour, and everyone has known characters like these at some point in their lives.

High Fidelity: The adaptation of Nick Hornby’s great novel is a geek movie all collectors can all relate to, not to mention everyone who’s ever had a messy breakup. A great flick for older geeks.

Office Space: A bunch of office workers rebel against their dull existence following one of their number being hypnotized and losing their neuroses. Great fun, and a definite cult film. It bombed when it came out, but found an audience on DVD.

American Splendor: This comic book adaptation/biopic is a fascinating mix of dramatized scenes and monologues from the subject of the film, namely indie comics star Harvey Pekar. A great look at another side of the comics world.

These are just five examples of the wealth of great stuff that is out there in the realm of geek movies. These are geek movies with a difference, and great examples of films with a cult edge that still manage to have a heart. What would you add to the list?

Apple Unveils New iPad Tablet Computer

January 28, 2010 By: Geek Category: Geek Gadgets

apple ipad 300x205 Apple Unveils New iPad Tablet ComputerThe wait is over and Apple’s highly anticipated tablet has finally been unveiled. The iPad was  revealed by Steve Jobs at a press conference in San Francisco. It is literally the missing link  between a smartphone and a laptop, and looks basically like an oversized iPhone. Its 9.7 inch  touchscreen is a beautiful thing to behold, as with all Apple products, and its diminutive size  of half an inch thick and weighing 1.5 pounds makes it a very attractive prospect indeed.

The Apple iPad acts as a web browser, e-book reader, games device, photo album, video viewer  and much more. The iPad may well be the ‘Kindle Killer’ that industry insiders have been  expecting from Apple for some time now. The unit is to go on sale in March at a price of $499  in the US, and other territories will soon find out when it will arrive in their stores and for  how much.

The basic model of the new Apple iPad has Wi-Fi and 16gb of storage, and offers ten hours of  use per battery charge. Not bad at all for something so graphics intensive! For 3G wireless,  there’s an additional $130 to pay, and models with higher storage are again more expensive.

Price aside, it is an amazing piece of equipment that it will be interesting to watch the  success of. Is the world actually in need of a device that is in-between the compact size of a  smartphone and the working dimensions of a laptop? I don’t know, but I certainly want one  already.

The Apple iPad features the same accelerometer and touchscreen capabilities as the iPhone and  the iPod Touch, but it sees the realm of touchscreen usability taken to the next level. As  ever, Apple have offered something spectacular, and which a great many people will want to try  out. Thanks to its sleek design, straightforward and intuitive UI (always a beautiful aspect of  Apple’s products) and the capabilities that it offers, I for one think that the company will  have another hit on their hands with the iPad.

The Joys of USB Turntables

January 13, 2010 By: Geek Category: Geek Gadgets

31onlXQ6r0L. SL160 The Joys of USB TurntablesWe’re seeing 2010 as a new start, and one of the big things we’ve all agreed on is that we have too much stuff around that we don’t use, including a big stack of vinyl. Thus the subject of a USB turntable came up, and our problems were solved. These things are great for people who ant to be able to archive their records for whatever purpose. Our reason was that we wanted to keep the music we’d loved while the records were still playable, and then eBay the vinyl so someone else could enjoy it all. It’s worked out well, as we found the things really easy to use and very reliable.

USB turntables have been around a while, and are superb ideas for serious music lovers everywhere. Thanks to their ease of use and tthe range of models from the budget variety up to hugely expensive professional editions, everyone can get in on act. Aside from installing some drivers, they’re pretty damn simple to set up, and the results you can get from transferring vinyl recordings to MP3 files are really quite impressive. If you’ve got a collection of vinyl you want to keep on enjoying long after the records themselves have either been thrown away or have deteriorated, then looking for one of the best USB turntables is the thing for you. We’re sold.

The New Ipod Nano With Video Camera Feature

December 28, 2009 By: Geek Category: Geek Gadgets

nano shoots video The New Ipod Nano With Video Camera Feature

Click here to check out the new iPod Nano

We’ve always been fans of the iPod Nano here at YourGeekness, and this latest upgrade to the device may seem frivolous at first, but it’s a great idea that hints at bigger things to come for the player. Now, the iPod nano has gone from being the poor relation of the iPod family to one of Apple’s most popular items.

The redesign of the iPod Nano and the addition of the skew feature were a superb start, and now with the advent of the video camera element, it has become even more fun and useful. Sure, the resolution isn’t perfect but it is certainly much better than you may expect from such a small device.

Plus, the short time limit of those videos may seem restrictive, but it has been made thus so you don’t fill the whole thing with long videos and leave your device without room for the music! The tiny microphone is also capable of some pretty good feats too, which again surprises us in a device so small and thin.

The fifth generation iPod Nano may be behind the iPod Touch in terms of capability and features, but it is far and away the best small mp3/entertainment device on the market right now, and with the addition of this camera, nothing else comes close.
