Your Geekness

The San Diego Comic Con is here, and movie, TV, comics and collectibles fans the world over are fuming with jealousy that they’re not there with those lucky ****s who managed to go this year. This year’s event is the 40th annual SDCC, and has attracted another sell-out crowd, along with the absolute cream, of the film, TV, video games, toys and comic industries, peddling their wares and previewing the delights that are to come.

There have been some massive panels at this year’s event, with James Cameron previewing Avatar, Robert Pattinson and ‘those other ones’ from Twilight previewing New Moon, Robert Downey Jr and co previewing Iron Man 2, a million and one comics industry announcements, the stars of the collectibles scene (check out the new items from Sideshow Collectibles at SDCC this year!).

Plus there have been the usual million workshops, panels, dealers, and mini events at the event that the major press doesn’t seem to cover, all of which we’d love to be able to go to.

Man, one year, ONE YEAR we’ll be there and soak it all up. Above all, aside from all of the big names that are there being all big named, the event is about fans and geeking out over the fantastic. What’s not to love?

One year it’ll be us there, filling YouTube and Flickr with goodies and making you all jealous. Until then, we must go and polish our Stormtrooper outfits and dream of Olivia Munn.

All you John Hughes fans might be thinking of moving now that news has surfaced that Ferris Bueller’s mate Cameron’s house, or at least the house the character lived in, is now up for sale. There’s no mention if you get Matthew Broderick and a shampoo horn in there with the deal, but what self-respecting geek wouldn’t want to live in the house that was used in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off? Just think, you could wake up each morning and plan your next day off in style while wandering the rooms and pretending to talk to the camera. Just don’t try and break the fourth wall for real, or the house value will slip dramatically.

The house is up for sale at a cool $2.3million, or £1.5million to us Brits. So just how nice is The House That Ferris Lived In? There’s 5,300 square feet of space to it, and the place is just as gorgeous as in the classic movie. Just keep an eye out for demented school Principals around the back door. The house features a wall of Ferris Bueller memorabilia from the shooting of the John Hughes teen movies masterpiece.

Yeah, getting the jitters to move. I wonder if they’ll throw in that mannequin/pulley system too? I could use that.

There are some brilliant attempts at trailers for films that don’t exist available online. You have to respect the work that goes into these things, as a bunch of them are truly spectacular. Granted, you may wonder who has *that* much time on their hands, but you can’t deny that some of these things are impressive. Sure, there are a million and one out there that are terrible, but now and again you’ll find some stunning pieces of work.

There’s a ton of them based on superhero movies and sequels that are yet to be made, such as The Flash and Green Lantern, utilizing original CG material and clips from other movies, but the most impressive of all of the fake trailers I’ve seen thus far is a fascinating trailer for a movie of the classic Thundercats cartoon. Using footage from, let’s see, Troy, X-men, Spy Kids, Garfield, Farscape, Lord of the Rings and lots more, plus brand new (and very impressive) CG effects and makeup, the maker has created a trailer that plays remarkably well. So what inspires people to make these things? Some are made for fun, some as technical exercises, and many others are (sadly) made to try and dupe gullible fans into thinking they’re real. It’s the former two that need respect. The latter just need girlfriends. Seriously.

There’s nothing wrong with getting your geek on once in a while, or every day for some of us. The number of geeky t-shirts currently lining my closet is growing at a worrying rate. Where once there were sensible colours and plain designs mixed with the odd band t-shirt, now there are anime shirts, comic shirts, movie shirts and all manner of other geek culture apparel.

There is something very satisfying about seeing somebody else wearing a shirt proclaiming ‘ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US’, as I did recently while out shopping. You know the other person understands the need to geek out.

It’s like some secret Masonic handshake. A knowing nod is shared between wearers, their chests proclaiming ‘42′ and ‘The Cake is a Lie’, and ‘Han Shot First’ and so on. It feels like your own exclusive little club, but in reality there are millions of us doing the same thing. That doesn’t make it any less awesome, though. Wear your geek credentials with pride!

You can wear your favourite anime t-shirts or movie quote shirts without making a huge statement, but it gives the rest of us a nice little thrill when we see our own kind out and about. It is a welcome reminder that we ain’t alone in our enthusiasm for these things.

The most well known outlet for geek t-shirts is undoubtedly ThinkGeek, where a bunch of mine are from (namely the ‘Geek’, ‘Practice Safe Hex’ and ‘All Your Base Are Belong To Us’ shirts so far). That place is a veritable treasure trove of pop culture and tech related apparel and tons of other stuff. They seem very fond of caffeine, so I like ‘em even more.

There are plenty of other places to find your essential shirts, and if you know where to look, you’ll find something to fit every fandom. Gamers, geeks and all the rest of us have been held down too long, and now we have our own fashion to drape across our glorious frames. You know something? We look damn good, too.

Klaatu barada nikto! We’ll say it even if Keanu won’t. This is your Geekness speaking, and we have come for your souls, or at least your attention. We are a bunch of fans, geeks, dorks, nerds and net addicts just like you, and we’re here to geek out over movies, music, comics, TV, collectibles and the joys of geek culture.

It seems that in recent years the geek life has come to the forefront of popular culture as the ‘in thing’, and quite rightly so. The Geeks have at last inherited the Earth, and thus the need for geek must be fulfilled. Like David Hasselhoff and being manly, geeks and the internet go together hand in hand.

We have some strong opinions, and we ain’t afraid to use them, so don’t expect everything to be light and fluffy. We kiss up to nobody. Unless they deserve it. So welcome to our piece of the web, where you’ll find all kinds of delights in the weeks and months to come. Pleased to meet you.

A big part of what we’re setting out to do is get to the meat and potatoes of the geek phenomenon and see what makes the scene, and us, tick. Whether it’s movies, games, bands, cartoons, toys or whatever, it is fair game to come under the scrutiny of Your Geekness.
