Geek T-shirts aren’t just a fashion statement, they’re a way of life

May 05, 2009 By: Geek Category: Geek, Geek Clothes

geek textshirt Geek T shirts arent just a fashion statement, theyre a way of lifeThere’s nothing wrong with getting your geek on once in a while, or every day for some of us. The number of geeky t-shirts currently lining my closet is growing at a worrying rate. Where once there were sensible colours and plain designs mixed with the odd band t-shirt, now there are anime shirts, comic shirts, movie shirts and all manner of other geek culture apparel.

There is something very satisfying about seeing somebody else wearing a shirt proclaiming ‘ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US’, as I did recently while out shopping. You know the other person understands the need to geek out.

It’s like some secret Masonic handshake. A knowing nod is shared between wearers, their chests proclaiming ’42′ and ‘The Cake is a Lie’, and ‘Han Shot First’ and so on. It feels like your own exclusive little club, but in reality there are millions of us doing the same thing. That doesn’t make it any less awesome, though. Wear your geek credentials with pride!

You can wear your favourite anime t-shirts or movie quote shirts without making a huge statement, but it gives the rest of us a nice little thrill when we see our own kind out and about. It is a welcome reminder that we ain’t alone in our enthusiasm for these things.

The most well known outlet for geek t-shirts is undoubtedly ThinkGeek, where a bunch of mine are from (namely the ‘Geek’, ‘Practice Safe Hex’ and ‘All Your Base Are Belong To Us’ shirts so far). That place is a veritable treasure trove of pop culture and tech related apparel and tons of other stuff. They seem very fond of caffeine, so I like ‘em even more.

There are plenty of other places to find your essential shirts, and if you know where to look, you’ll find something to fit every fandom. Gamers, geeks and all the rest of us have been held down too long, and now we have our own fashion to drape across our glorious frames. You know something? We look damn good, too.

Star Wars Day – May the 4th be with you!

May 04, 2009 By: Geek Category: Star Wars

starwars 238x300 Star Wars Day May the 4th be with you!So today is apparently Star Wars day, my young Padawan. Thanks to the delights of today’s date sounding very much like a rather well known phrase from a rather well known film, we get to declare an international day of geekery. Can’t complain at that, really. So how are you spending your Star Wars Day? Dressing up in your Wookie costume and howling at pedestrians as you zip past them in your car (which you’ve modified to look rather like a landspeeder)? No? Well, maybe one or two of you.

I suggest that you spend the day with some friends and all six Star Wars movies. Spend the prequels shouting at the screen while surrounded by Star Wars action figures Star Wars Day May the 4th be with you! (all of whom have their blasters trained on jar Jar Binks, the scourge of every classic Star Wars fan’s life). Then once your collective spleens have been vented, you can all relax and enjoy the original trilogy.

darth vader 300x200 Star Wars Day May the 4th be with you!Y’know, the special editions of the original trilogy work really well. While their initial incarnations were incredible achievements in cinema at the time, the effects and cinematography have aged rather a lot. Thanks to those revised editions, a new generation of Star Wars fans is growing up with a version of the saga that will blow them away every time. I’m a huge fan of the originals, and seeing Return of the Jedi at the cinema as a child is one of my best childhood memories, but I have to agree that the special editions were a great idea. They were handled well, and while not every new addition to the films worked perfectly, most of them did.

The only problem I have with the special editions now is their DVD versions. Well, Return of the Jedi in particular. That moment where Obi Wan, Yoda and Anakin return as glowing entities has been tarnished by George Lucas swapping Sebastian Shaw (aka the human version of Darth Vader, whose armoured incarnation was played by Dave Prowse and voiced by James Earl Jones) for Hayden Christensen, who played the character in episodes 2 and 3 of the prequel series. That aside, the Star Wars special editions are perfect viewing for today. So slip on your Jedi (bath) robes and enjoy some of the finest entertainment that has ever been committed to film.

Dear Kevin Smith, we loved ‘Jersey Girl’ even if nobody else did

May 03, 2009 By: Geek Category: Movies

jersey girl 201x300 Dear Kevin Smith, we loved Jersey Girl even if nobody else didWe are out there. We may be few in numbers, but we are certain of our allegiance. We are the elite few that loved ‘Jersey Girl’, Kevin Smith Dear Kevin Smith, we loved Jersey Girl even if nobody else did‘s first foray into more commercial cinema. While he has since gone back to the arena of the crude with ‘Zack and Miri Make a Porno’, ‘Jersey Girl Dear Kevin Smith, we loved Jersey Girl even if nobody else did‘ was a valiant attempt to make something that would appeal to a wider audience. It failed rather. The problem was, it wasn’t what Smith’s hardcore fans wanted, and the general audience had an issue with it being a Kevin Smith film.

The thing is, it is actually very watchable. Funny and heartwarming, it features a great performance from the late George Carlin as well as a very sweet performance from Liv Tyler. While it was a commercial flop, the film is a creative success, as it shows Kevin Smith Dear Kevin Smith, we loved Jersey Girl even if nobody else did is capable of more than just Fart jokes. For more glimpses of what Kevin is really capable of, there’s always the classic Chasing Amy, and Clerks 2, which has some of his best writing in it to date.

Yeah, we really liked ‘Jersey Girl’. Give it a chance and you may well do so too.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine may make you question your geekness, but you’ll still love it

x men origins wolverine movie poster4 224x300 X Men Origins: Wolverine may make you question your geekness, but youll still love itSo then, Cyclops is in it, along with Deadpool, Emma Frost, Gambit and a bunch of other X-Men universe porn. The thing is, X-Men origins: Wolverine X Men Origins: Wolverine may make you question your geekness, but youll still love it is supposed to be a prequel, and the inclusion of many of these characters is something that is making many fans’ heads spin right now. While I too am troubled by the comics universe that I love being turned on its head by such flagrant continuity destruction, I can’t help but still look at the new Wolverine movie as a big chunk of fun.

If you’re a fan of the X-Men movies and Hugh Jackman, while never having read any of the comics, then you’ll love this film in all of its sweaty-Jackman-shouting-in-a-vest glory, but if you’re a comics diehard, it’s gonna make your head spin. As a movie experience it will leave you questioning Marvel’s intentions- do they really want to alienate so many of their diehard audience? It certainly looks like it, but then your voice of reason will kick in and remind you this is the movies, not the comics.

SL160 X Men Origins: Wolverine may make you question your geekness, but youll still love itWhile elements of Wolverine’s comics canon origin are certainly there, they have been reworked for the film audience, and I can’t really begrudge Fox for doing that. The thing is, the diehard core of X-men fans is dying off in the comics industry. With the X-titles moving ever further away from their glory days, I can fully understand Marvel and Fox wanting to cater more for fans of the blockbuster movies. Yeah, I even count X3 in that (hey, at least it LOOKED pretty, even though the script was trash). So if you’re an old-school fan of He Who makes The Snikt Noise, try not to get all ‘Scanners’ when you see the flick. It is, after all, just a movie.

SL160 X Men Origins: Wolverine may make you question your geekness, but youll still love itYou see, everything would have been okay if they’d put Jubilee in there as his companion and just had them caught up in a life-or-death battle instead of shoehorning all the leftover Marvel characters into it, but that’s just my opinion.
